Ortho-k contact lenses - Freedom without LASIK

Sick of wearing glasses or contact lenses, but don't want expensive eye surgery? Vision Potential at Browns Plains can help!

Ortho-K lenses, also called Orthokertology, involve a specially fitted Gas Permeable contact lens that works to gently flatten the front surface of your eye (called the cornea). The lens is worn in your eyes overnight and removed in the morning. The re-shaping effect corrects your vision so your contact lenses or glasses don't have to -  so no glasses or contact lenses are worn through the day!

If you are looking for more information about OrthoK lenses in Brisbane, then Vision Potential at Browns Plains has what you need.

It all begins with an eye test  - Click here to contact us online or call 3800 1988 today

How OrthoK Works - Safely and effectively

OrthoK lenses are only worn at night while you sleep and are available to people of all ages. They allow you to see clearly all day long with nothing in your eyes! It is a fitting procedure that temporarily reduces nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. The customised gas permeable (GP) lenses are designed to gently change the shape of your cornea. The corneal shape change is not permanent and it is safe. The effect lasts for about a day or two which is why the lenses must be worn each night to maintain the effect.

The vast majority of patients maintain clear and comfortable vision for all of their waking hours.

The best bit is that the lenses are applied each night before bed. That’s right, the effect happens while you are sleeping. When you wake up in the morning, simply remove and clean the lenses and enjoy clear vision all day with nothing in your eyes!

Alternative to LASIK Surgery

OrthoK offers similar results as LASIK, but it is non-surgical and non-permanent. This makes Ortho K great for people who's prescription is often changing, do not want or are unsuitable for eye surgery. Ortho K is also completely temporary, where LASIK procedures are not. The following slide shows 2 maps describing the shape of the cornea (also called corneal topographies ).

The top map shows a patient who underwent LASIK surgery, while the bottom is a OrthoK patient.

Is this treatment for me?

In many cases, yes, however to be certain you should have an appointment with our trained Optometrists so your eyes can be tested and the best solution developed for you. Our Optometrists are specially trained and experienced in Ortho-K fitting and testing procedures so that we can accurately assess your needs.

Myopia (Nearsightedness) Control

If you or your child is nearsighted (also known as myopia), their schoolwork, sports and other recreational activities can be affected. Also, children’s nearsightedness tends to progress over time (progressive myopia). Of all the options that have been studied in controlled clinical trials, OrthoK has been shown to be most effective at slowing and even stopping progressive myopia.
